IP protection (Protection Index)
The Standard IEC 60529 1997-06 (formerly IEC529 IEC 70-1) 2000-06 A1 + “Degrees of Protection by enclosures “, establishes a system for classifying degrees protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment, the rated voltage not exceed 72.5 kV.
This rule allows to indicate the level of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment against access to hazardous parts inside the case and against
ingress of solid foreign objects and water. This rule does not consider
protection against the risks of explosion or environmental situations
such as moisture, corrosive fumes, molds or insects.
In any case, the degree of IP protection declared must be ensured
in “ordinary condition of service of equipment.”
First and second figures according to the regulations CEI70-1 – IEC 529 – IEC 144 – UTE C20 – 010 – DIN 40050.
Protection against the penetration of exterior solid body elements:
0 = Not protected
1 = Protected against solid body elements bigger than 50 mm
2 = Protected against solid body elements bigger than 12 mm
3 = Protected against solid body elements bigger than 2,5 mm
4 = Protected against solid body elements bigger than 1 mm
5 = Protected against dust
6 = Totally protected against dust
Protection against the penetration of liquids:
0 = Not protected
1 = Protected against vertically falling water drops
2 = Protected against dripping water when tilted up 15°
3 = Protected against rain
4 = Protected against splashing water
5 = Protected against water jets
6 = Protected against heavy seas
7 = Protected against the effects of immersion
8 = Protected against the effects of flooding
